Massachusetts law and sober houses have been a topic of discussion for decades. A sober house is typically a single-family home located in a residential neighborhood. A sober house, recovery house, sober living house, or recovery home refer to a group living arrangement between men or women in recovery, living in a home, working individually on their recovery. The municipalities and departments may have questions about what a sober house is, and how Massachusetts law and other legal theories apply to recovery homes. Since March 12, sober house protections have been a matter of Federal law.

Belonging and Camaraderie –Early recovery can feel lonely, living with other people working at recovery too really helps. Any resident who drinks alcohol or uses drugs must be immediately expelled. Rockland Recovery is not your typical sober home in Massachusetts. We expect a lot from our guests, and we hold the men and women in our homes accountable for their recovery. We work closely with our alumni, the community, and other treatment centers in the area to provide endless support to the men and women who come to our homes. Grant funds will help create 10 new sober housing units for senior citizens with mental health needs at Mendes Monteiro House in Dartmouth. Grant funding will help construct six new affordable housing units for families and individuals. We have made an important choice about the kind of recovery experience we want to serve. The Willing House is a MASH Certified Peer-Based Independent Living Community for Men and Women in Recovery. Our homes occupy the space between inpatient care and returning home. The Willing House provides independent living, with accountability, continuing and continuity of recovery for those who want to learn a new way to live. Sober Surroundings is a sober home only and we do not provide addiction services or addiction treatment of any kind. Better Recovery –Research has shownpeople who attend sober living are more likely to remain alcohol and drug-free longer. Grant funds will help create 14 units of affordable supportive housing for families in Leominster. Sober Surroundings is a sober community dedicated to providing affordable sober living.
The Wenham House is a unique recovery environment that does not provide clinical or medical treatment. Guests experience an intensive and immersive Twelve Step education that enables long-term recovery. We help adult men with substance use disorders—drug addiction or alcoholism—in a safe and serene 14-bed historic home in Essex County. Chapter 40A, Section 3 applies to “safety laws, regulations, practices, ordinances, bylaws and decisions of a city or town” that would discriminate against disabled individuals. Their facility has ample room for the array of activities that compose a holistic addiction treatment program including yoga, guided meditation, music and art therapy, therapy dog encounters, massage and reiki.
